Devil May Cry 2: Q&A
What is Devil May Cry 2?
Devil May Cry 2 is a fully 3D action game that follows the continuing story of Dante private investigator, demon slayer and star of the now classic Devil May Cry through a breath taking brand new adventure. Dante is the heir to a mystical legend of biblical proportions. As we discovered in the first instalment his father, Sparda, saved mankind from the devil himself, now Dante must take up his sword and pistols once more and continue the fight to save humanity. Devil May Cry 2 features a second playable character, Lucia, a new addition to the series.. Lucia has a separate adventure to Dante but their actions run in parallel in an intricately woven story that sees the lead characters working towards a common goal.
Who has designed Devil May Cry 2?
Tsuyoshi Tanaka has been handed the responsibility of creating a worthy successor to Devil May Cry. Devil May Cry 2 is Tanaka san's first major project since graduating from editor of one of Japans most respected Games Magazines to Producer at Capcom's R&D studio 1, the studio responsible for games such as Resident Evil Online and the forthcoming Red Dead Revolver.
Tanaka san is also producing Network Resident Evil, which along with Devil May Cry 2 is being overseen by the father of survival horror, Shinji Mikami. Devil May Cry 2 continues the move towards a more immediate experience, with the R&D studio 1 team working to marry the familiar puzzle and cinematic elements of the past game with a control system that allows for more intuitive combat sequences and a faster passage through the game's many locations.
What is the basic idea of the game?
Devil May Cry 2 has a dual storyline. To learn what really happens within this title, gamers must play through both Dante and Lucia's separate game discs. The game begins with Lucia fighting a flock of demon harpies, Dante bursts through the roof with familiar flair and despatches almost all enemies before his feet touch the ground. The adventure begins. We learn that the mysterious Arius, President of an evil business conglomerate, has harnessed the power of the underworld in an attempt to gain more power in the human world. He plans to destroy ancient sites and unspoilt countryside in order to expand his empire with a view to eventually control the world. Dante must stop this unchecked use of demon power before Arius lets hell return to earth and the Devil exact revenge on the son of Sparda.
Lucia's story begins after her mystical mother Matier village is destroyed by Arius and his demons. Matier survives and asks Dante and Lucia to help stop Arius and restore peace and order to the world. We learn that Lucia possesses three of four precious relics that contain the power to seal the gates of hell forever. Lucia embarks on a quest to find the forth artefact and ultimately destroy Arius.
What sort of game is Devil May Cry 2?
Devil May Cry 2 is a dark mix of action and adventure. The gameplay has been refined taking the best elements from the first title and crafting them resulting in an even more exciting and enthralling experience. The same sense of immediacy has been captured in this title and with Dante's plethora of new moves, gamers will no doubt be blown away by the fluidity of in game action.
Once again in game locations are fully 3D with many different camera angles exploited to view Dante and Lucia's progress throughout the game. Each area has been meticulously designed with each feature painstakingly detailed in the familiar Gothic Devil May Cry way. Levels range from a medieval looking European village to a towering Gotham style metropolis. Gamers will gasp at the sheer scale of some of the areas Dante and Lucia can explore.
The army of darkness has expanded; Dante and Lucia must do battle with a myriad of new adversaries from crazed vampire monkeys through iron clad skeletal demons to vast bosses that morph out of the tallest skyscrapers. These new challenges allow Dante to demonstrate the depth of his new moves and abilities. Already one of the most athletic heroes around Dante can now back flip, side flip, dive, roll, fire in two directions at once and even run up walls in a bid to evade the ever present evil that surrounds him. His manoeuvrability has been enhanced in every way conceivable contributing to the effortless feel of the control system.
Once again combo's are requisite in obtaining an all important style bonus. Ratings are given each time you send a demon back to the fiery chasm from whence he came. These range from D rank (Don't Worry) to S rank (Show Time!). Particularly successful kills are rewarded with Red Orbs. This feature remains unchanged from the first game. Red Orbs are required to power up Dante's sword and pistols. This in turn unlocks various deadly combo attacks.
How has the Devil Mode Changed?
The Devil Mode has evolved for Devil May Cry 2. In Devil May Cry you could change into your devil state at any given moment in order to quickly despatch particularly difficult enemies. This time there is more strategy involved. You can still change into your devil mode at the touch of a button but which devil power you choose to use is left up to you. As Dante and Lucia progress through the game they find different power jewels or hearts that enhance their respective devil modes in different ways. These different powers can be assigned via the amulet. Each heart can be used individually or cooperatively dependant on the situation the player finds them self in.
Once the player has equipped either Dante or Lucia with the desired heart simply flick L1 on the PlayStation 2 controller to unleash attacks of ungodly power. Once again as in Devil May Cry, the devil trigger can only be activated for a limited amount of time, the devil gauge at the top left hand side of the screen tells the player how long and how much devil power they have left. The gauge can be refilled by successful and particularly stylish attacks. Dante as we know changes into an all-powerful devil, Lucia can change into an Angel Spirit. Dante and Lucia can stay in these more efficient forms until the Devil Trigger bar is depleted or until the player presses the L1 button again to restore them to human form. Heart powers include Arial Heart - the ability to fly; Fire Heart - the ability to deal a devastating fire attack from Dante's sword, Healing Heart - the ability to recover health while in devil mode and many more. The amulet is accessed by pressing the select button and proceeding to the items menu.
What else can be collected?
Devil May Cry 2 has many secrets and for the keen explorer the rewards are great. Various orbs are hidden in all manner of nooks and crannies and usually in places where you would least expect them. In addition to the most common red orbs, extra powerful items and spells can be collected and stored in either characters inventory for later use. These other objects include Holy Water - can be used as a kind of smart bomb, it harms every enemy on screen, Green Orbs - recovers a small amount of health, Gold Orbs - recovers all health when the player is killed, Purple Orbs - extends the devil trigger gauge, Blue Orbs - extend the health bar and many more.
Weapons also play a large part in Devil May Cry 2. Dante initially begins the game armed with his sword named 'Sparda' after his father and his beloved twin pistols named Ebony and Ivory. Lucia begins with throwing daggers and twin Cutlaseers (a type of curved short sword). During the course of the game both characters are able to find bigger and better weapons including shotguns, rocket launchers and other projectile weapons. When collected, these are automatically added to the characters inventory. Players can change weapons at any time by flicking the R 2 shoulder button.
Flair while in combat is once again an important factor with stylish attacks and combinations being rewarded both instantly in the form of additional orbs and at the end of each mission. As in the original title orbs can be exchanged for upgrading weapons and attacks or items such as health bonuses and restoration of magical powers.
How is the game split up?
Devil May Cry 2 is made up of 31 missions, 18 for Dante and 13 for Lucia, each of which is tied in to the main quest. Within each mission, the player is given a series of tasks to complete, which range from unlocking doors, to killing specific creatures or simply reaching a pre-determined location. The scale of this game is so much greater than its predecessor, gamers are guaranteed a deeply engrossing and awe inspiring gameplay experience.
The two discs run Dante and Lucia's stories in parallel fashion but each character has a very different path through the game. Both discs must be thoroughly explored in order to get the most out of Devil May Cry 2. Gamers should never get the feeling of 'I've played this level before'; puzzles and goals will be different for each character through every aspect of each separate adventure.
What are the game's strongest aspects?
Devil May Cry 2 is the sum of its parts, with too many strong elements vying for attention to single out one example. As well as boasting some breathtaking design and architecture, Dante and Lucia's control system is undoubtedly one of the most intuitive and free experiences you can have on any console. Statues and many other objects can be smashed to reveal additional power-ups, while assorted platforms, ledges and rooftops, become extremely useful when evading the many assailants that materialise in each area. Similarly, the gradual introduction of new locations is designed to entice the player further into the adventure and the excitement of unlocking new areas or discovering a secret rooms force the player to explore every avenue available to them. The supporting cast is equally well realised and the assorted minions of Arius grow in power and intelligence as the game progresses. Thus, it is vital that the player locates additional weapons and accumulates additional spells to counter their menace, ensuring a beautifully balanced game.
Ultimately, though, it is the well-judged gameplay that impresses. The action is fast and fluid, yet the need to constantly strive for varied attacks ensures that even in the busiest tussle, the player must try and vary their attacks in order to progress with the best possible weaponry. And while it is satisfying to upgrade to a bigger and better weapon the more powerful creatures that are waiting more than balance out their advantages.
